Last night I had a little fun with the full spectrum K-01 during the way too bright moon and decided to take a picture of M42, the Great Orion Nebula.

Very nice. But I would like to know a bit more. For a start, how does the full spectrum conversion affect the result - in terms of what would I not see with a normal body? I assume the K-01 was attached to a tracking telescope (some kind of refractor, going by the stars). How many images were stacked to get the final result?

The full spectrum conversion makes it more sensitive to hydrogen alpha than a normal one, though Pentax is pretty sensitive to it anyway. Through a normal one there would have been a bit more blue mixed in. I used a Williams Optics Flat 2 reducer and flattener, Optolong CLS filter, and the telescope I used is a TPO 8RC f/8 Ritchey Chretien that has a 1624mm focal length, though the flattener and reducer took it to f/6.4 and 1300mm focal length. The mount is an iOptron ZEQ25, which the current version is the CEM25P that is supposedly way better. Since the moon was so bright and close I did 180 x 30 second exposures at ISO 1600, stacked them in DSS 3.3.6, then did about 5 minutes worth of work in Photoshop CS 5.5.

So impressive for a "failed" camera -- or any camera! I can look at it for hours.

very impressive photo - are you basically free from "light pollution"?

I live in Bortle Green (mag 21.4) skies, but that night the moon was less close to the nebula, so I doubted I was going to get anything. My imaging last night was also annoying.

Thanks! Using any telescope with the secondary mounted on games like that makes those diffraction spikes. I do have new stuff to post here. I need to get to it!

What is Bortle Green? Is that equivalent to Bortle 1 or 2? I live in a Bortle 2 to 3 area depending on tourist numbers.

On the sky map colors correspond to classes. Green is 4. Bortly 1 is black, bortle 2 gray, 3 blue. It for all the way to white 9.

Also really nice! Great job. I love the flare effect you get on the stars using reflectors. Refractors are nice, but I do love that flare.

Amazing shot! One of these days I really need to get set up for astrophotography. More light pollution in town than when I was little, but I know some nearby places that are pretty dark. A lot of the Scout camps are as well.
