Testing w/ night shot
Posted By: fillerupmac, 09-02-2008, 07:59 PM

This image was taken this weekend.

K10D, 2 minutes, mounted on a Celestron CG5 telescope mount. No stacking, no darks, just the single image.

In the upper right center of the shot is a yellow "star" with some haze around it - that is the Andromeda Galaxy. Also seen in the center of this image is the constellation Cassiopeia, known to some as the "W". Just below the center of the photo, is two small blue fuzzy spots, very close together. This is known as the "Double Cluster" - two star clusters very close together.

As you might guess, I have an interest in astronomy. This is my first "serious" attempt at astrophotography, taken as a test of the equipment, the mount's capability to track accurately for a length of time, the amount of hot pixels that appear after a length of time (suprisingly very few!), and Pentax's Remote assistant was used to trigger the shots.

All in all, I was very impressed. Pentax rocks!

Oh, and the red "haze" you might see was clouds

Yes, that is a very nice shot. I like to mess with people. And I pay $8/month for 800 megs of storage and 35GB of bandwidth so I don't have to worry about where I host my images. Also $8/yr for my domain. Well worth it.

Dave - I editedmy post to include more info. Thanks for the kudos.

Oh BTW, I forgot to mention - that's the Pentax 18-250, at 18mm. Shot towards the northeast, Andromeda constellation to the right center, Cassiopeia in the upper center. Just a hint of the Milky Way. Shot from a very dark site in Colorado.

Am I right that the Milky Way is going through the middle of the picture from top to bottom on a left to right angle?

Gads - I am really confused. I went back in and edited the post, included the second IMG line, and the photo appeared in FF V3, no sweat.

As quick as it appeared, it has now vanished. I may have to rely on attachments. Lucky me, I just renewed at PBase....

and it took some messing around in IE to see it too. That's NOT worth the trouble....

(One step forward, three steps back...)
