Trying for a 40's look & feel
Posted By: Falcons, 09-03-2008, 04:56 AM

This is another version of one I posted earlier, I really like the expression I got on my youngest boys face as well as the lighting.

Trying to achieve a sort of 40's sepia toned look (for no particular reason).

Let me know if I have achieved it. Thanks for looking.

I would say you nailed it with a nine-pound hammer and a railroad spike.

I like what you have done to the portrait! That sepia certainly can give an idea of a 40's photo, but I must say that the tight cropping is more modern than 40's, though.. But it works for me nevertheless! Well done!

This would be avant garde 40's. I like how you have both the soft focus AND the shallow DOF of a large format (or at least mf) portrait lens.

I think combing old and new is a great idea. Wonderful work.

perfect but i think you should add more grain. of course that is just being backwards for the sake of it, you seem to have brought all of the good things out of the 40s and applied them here.

really quite nice work

The pitch was hot and fast....... Falcons takes a swing..... and the ball is gone, a solid hit over the end wall and out of the park.

Ya you nailed it.

I think you did really well on this but there is one part that I have to nitpick on.

The area of his cheek below and to the right of his right eye doesn't look right. Whether it is just a DOF effect or perhaps some post-processing cloning it looks "smudged" and is almost blending with the light area of the background.

I think the reason I find this distracting is that the rest of his cheek (which is on the same plane as the problem area) is clearly defined even though it is slightly out of focus.

just my 2 cents worth...

I am particularly interested in knowing how you got that kind of a background? Was it done later or did you use some kind of cloth or something?

BTW, it is an excellent picture!
