If the kids can do it..........

Every year for the past 51 years boaters have gathered on the last Saturday in March here in the Central Pennsylvania mountains for the running of the "Red Mo" white water race. It's a 7.5 mile run from Peale Bridge to the Rt. 53 bridge on this Class II+ creek. It gets it's name from the color of the water caused by acid mine drainage from mines that were flooded back in the 1930's. No fish or any other aquatic creatures live in it, but it's the most convenient water to hold the competition. This area is pretty sparsely populated. Canoes(single bladed paddles only), kayaks and SUP's (stand up to paddle) are all allowed and there are usually 200+ competitors.

The most interesting competitors are the children. They range from 8 to 13 years of age in this series, and the ones who are paddling solo are trained by a world class Slalom kayaker by the name of Dave Kurtz. The first pic is of an exhaused Ava Kurchak. She is 13 years old and this year she finished fourth out of 200 racers, and first in her class. I'm not sure who the other kids are, but they are talented, brave little souls.

Photographic conditions were kind of tricky. I was using two cameras: My k-70 with the Pentax 50-200mm WR lens, and my K-30 with My Tamron 70-300mm tele-macro. Both lenses fortunately had CP filters, since the glare off the water on this clear day was often blinding. I was acting as a safety person at the last obstacle before the finish line and I photographed all 200 paddlers as they came by....so let's hear it for the kids!

Even with the CPL, glare was an issue, but the expressions on these kid's faces are priceless.
