Stone-faced Portrait
Lens: Pentax-D FA 150-450 Camera: Pentax K-1 Photo Location: China ISO: 6400 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F8

Actually a Terracotta-faced portrait.

Taken at the Xian Terracotta Warriors Museum.

One of Emperor Qin's (246 BC) live sized terracotta soldiers. This one is part of an archer and he is displayed in a glass case in a separate building in the Terracotta Warriors Museum . Photographing him was a bit of a problem for two reasons. Firstly the glass case created a lot of reflections and secondly the big crowd milling around the case made it difficult to get a clear shot. But a photographer's patience in the end pays off.

Still, there was a bit of reflection to remove in PP. This will be used for a book cover.

Very impressive IQ considering the shooting conditions and lighting! The K1 at 6400 has performed beautifully.

Very nice capture Schraubstock...good to know that you'll be rewarded for carrying that hefty lens around.

Thanks.
Never really stops to amaze me. Can't wait to get my hands on the MakII and take it to a still higher level, if it is true what they are saying.
Cheers

And thanks to you as well.
Bit like the Mona Lisa but in a different way. Like a defiant smirk I thought.
Cheers

Ha, that's nothing. I console myself to know my wife's handbag as a "counterweight" would make a good argument in favour of the lens.
Cheers

Two of my daughters were there 2 weeks ago and also noted problems with crowds making it difficult to get photos, not just there but at other venues in China as well. They also mentioned that the figures appeared larger than one would have expected for the time, perhaps the Emperor wanted a really intimidating bodyguard.

Very impressive still life. I would second that previous comment, given the difficult lighting conditions, reflections, milling crowds you had to deal with...you were able to get an exceptional result....6400 ISO....the K1 has tremendous high ISO capability...I'm still amazed at what my K-1 can do.

Will be an eye catching book cover...can you tell us which book this photo will grace ?

A classy shot. I think this would look great hanging in a living room or hotel lobby.

Not all of them. I had a one on one private tour and I placed the same question. Among them there are some larger ones as I had noted and I was told of all the soldiers the larger ones are always the higher ranking officers. To me then it seems the larger or fatter you were in those days the greater a chance you had to become a high ranking officer.
