Girl with Cat,1 & 2
Lens: D FA 28-105 Camera: K7 Photo Location: Surrey,UK ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/180s Aperture: F9.5

My first "Cat Portraits" ..... well we couldn't get him out of the room, so decided she might as well hold him

Pentax K7 - D FA 28-105mm - F9.5 - ISO 100 - 1/180th
Cactus V6II - RF60/RF60x flashes

I've been experimenting with the lights in the small space available in the living room, and have made more seperation from the black curtains with a backlight, one flash in a softbox on the floor behind. The main light is a shoot-through white umbrella.

Thanks for your views and thoughts ..... Nigel

Edit (7th May): Just added another one from the same shoot ......Cat got away ....

Successful experiment,

Using Flash is always problematic because the light that comes out is hard even if you use the built-in diffusors, the game is to know how to direct and the use of power,
I can tell you that the two portraits are very successful, the light is soft and wraps around the subject well, good shots.

"Wraps around" ... Yes, I suppose it does, that's a good way of describing it. Thanks maw, and eaglem too!

Thank you Nigel for the mention,

I must also say that your guides are not only essential and instructive, but also essential for those who use flashes "always very difficult topic".

I think the first is very good. The second nails it except the cat expression.

LOL. I guess swan is not a cat owner. A cat HAS to be the center of attention and this one does not want to share the limelight. Great shots, Nigel.

I guess the Guides deal with the matters of how the flashes work and how to get them going properly, depending on your camera /lens/situation ..... The whole matter of what to do with the flashes once you've got them going, well that's another big mysterious area, and I often find myself struggling to cope with things especially when the subjects are mobile and 'non-complient" (ie daughters!). Sometimes it all comes together, I just wish it did every time!
