do you like churches?
Posted By: Gooshin, 09-11-2008, 07:36 AM

this one is a big one...

"Храм Христа Спасителя" or, "The Cathedral of Christ the Savior"

it was blown up during the soviet revolution in 1931, then they tried to build stuff in its place but never could, something about the foundation being of swampy type, or maybe its just gods will that no stuff be built there

Lenin wanted to erect the worlds largest building as a monument of the socialist regime in its place, cant really blame him.

in the mid 90's they rebuilt the cathedral, i believe it is the largest cathedral in russia

I love churches, and this one seems very beautiful and impressive You chose a good day to photograph it (nice blue sky with just enough clouds), and the exposure seems spot on.

However, I find the distortion too strong/obvious in the bottom corners. I usually don't mind the wide-angle perspective, but in this case the lightposts, especially the "outermost" ones, look too weird (IMHO).

I do as well. Your image is very good of a stunning building. When was it taken?

I'm not sure if it's an invitation but here's one in Charlottetown PEI that to this day remains the tallest building here.

This was taken at 12mm and I couldn't get everything in with the street limits there. I want to try my new 10-20mm there again soon.

my photo was taken 6 days ago, (i had to do an emergency trip back home)

it was taken at 10.3mm, but the camera registered it as 11mm (lately ive been trying to "back off" very slightly from the extreme edges of zooms.

I wondered the same and could not resist to show one big from here. It is the main church in Helsinki. It would be nice to have churches thread...

All three are great shots of churches. Let's start a church thread here.

From Middlebury, Vermont--small town--small church.

Lenin was long time dead by 1931... so you can't really blame him.

There are a number of towns/cities in England which have planning legislation specifically to ensure this is so, that the historic shape and form of the city on the skyine is preserved. The city of Chichester is one example - nothing more than 4 stories (from memory) is permitted, so the cathedral stands above all in the centre.

That's why St Dunstan's (the church in my shot) is the tallest in Charlottetown. All the modern building are limited in height and it's been this way for a long time.

Can I play too!

Gooshin, I read about that church somewhere, maybe it was on TV...forget. Cool history and rebuilding project.

Love old spooky churches....last year wife and I spent 4 days in April in NYC (oldest boy was in a Orchestra competition at Carnegie) and we walked and used the subway everywhere.....

All were taked with her Panasonic TZ1, and the entire trip the WB was (doh!) set wrong, so all have been touched up in Picasa with various PP.

Some were VERY tall, though in NYC that is a relative term....LOL!

And this cool graveyard in front of one....

Can you tell I needed a wider lens? Cant wait to return with my K200D and some fun lenses.....

I like the image. The tilt-shift lens costs way too much money and I don't think it is necessary for most of our work. I think your image would also make a great black and white image.
