How do you find all these visitors?! I'm guessing at least some visit my yard, but I'm not seeing them.

I really don't know... I just see them on the flowers, and rush to take my camera, put the 50 and the TC on, screw the flashgun and go back down... if I'm lucky they're still there, and keep steady for enough seconds for me to MF on them and take a couple of snaps, before flying to another flower and make me start all over again.

The Aricias were frantic, the Colias even more so when flying, but were keeping still on a flower for longer, so they were easier to photograph.
The last one was the more patient of all...

Great series. Sounds like you have your system down pat.

Thanks!
It's actually quite simple and very very cheap.
I use one Kenko MC7 2X Macro TC with a SMC-M 50/1.7 for most of my macro work.
It has two scales, calibrated for a 50mm lens at infinity and at 0.45m, exactly the minimum and maximum focusing distance of the lens I use.

Max magnification is 1:1, but I found that I can go beyond 4:1 simply by inverting a 28mm lens on top of the TC.
I don't need that much with butterflies however, so the 50mm fits the bill.
Light is mostly ambient, with a small pop from a shoe-mounted Yongnuo flash.
