you need to close tot he action, would the 55-300 Hd DA WR or PLM be a better alternative ?

Yes and no. Obviously you were close enough with the 18-135 to cut off the runners head. Not something that helps the image. And you probably didn't need that fast of a shutter speed. Slowing your shutter speed a couple of clicks would have allowed for lower ISO and to close your aperture to f/8. With a 55-300mm you expand your reach to more of the field. The trade off is that as you increase focal length you increase the need for faster shutter speeds and higher ISO to stop the action and reduce camera shake. The PLM focuses faster than the 18-135 which would make a big difference. Your K-3 also needs the latest firmware for the PLM to work. I'd also suggest to try and position yourself so you can see the players faces. Usually adds more interest than the back of their heads. My two cents.
