Jostling for position
Lens: Sigma 18-55 Camera: Pentax K3 Photo Location: Cloverdale BC ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/180s

I shoot a lot of Roller Derby in Vancouver BC, here is a picture of two Jammers jostling for position as they are skating around the track.
Roller Derby is a fast pace sport that can be challenging to shoot given the lighting and venues we shoot in.

I used to love the old school banked wooden track roller derby. Now it is all flat track but still pretty cool. Nice image!

Did you have any trouble focusing this?

Hi SSGGeezer, I am old enough to have had the pleasure to watch bank track on TV but never had the opportunity to see it live.

I was super stocked reviewing the photos from this game and seeing how this photo turned out.

I have had the good fortune to shoot alongside and learn from some great derby photographers. The trick of capturing the images in focus requires, a good knowledge of the sport, centre single focus and constantly half pressing the shutter button until you are ready to pull the trigger all the way.

I also shoot with multiple stobes to light and freeze the action.

Great image! Tough to tell if the Jammer in black is pulling the jersey of her red opponent or if it's stick on some velcro. It's more fun to think the former.

We have both flat and banked track roller derby here in Seattle, because...you know...Seattle.

Thanks for the suggestion Chetverovod. I guess I could have photoshopped out the flags, I just didn't want to crop to tight.
