Originally posted by sergeremy I very much enjoyed spending time Oltrarno ('Diladdarno' some called it?). The understated beauty of Santo Spirito, the grandezza of Palazzo Pitti and Boboli gardens, Forte Belvedere, San Miniato al Monte (where a friend and I had a wonderful conversation with a very smart, kind, funny and knowledgeable priest) and it's very peaceful neighbor San Salvatore... And friendly, family-run, tourist-free trattorie (well, at least in the late 1980's). Loved it!
Yup,
Diladdarno is the proper denomination in vernacular... it comes from "di là d'Arno", "di là"/"al di là" meaning "on the other side (of)" (because the city proper is on the northern bank).
San Miniato al Monte is a very beautiful church, I think I posted a picture of the apsis mosaic some weeks ago...
And I also went to the Forte on that day... it's no doubt an awe-inspiring fortification, with a perfect geometry etc. etc... but it probably would not be the same without the view...
