Morning riverscape

Not far! River is rivière, while "big river" is fleuve. A fleuve is wider, usually longer, but the official definition is that a fleuve ends up in the sea... although that's why most are big

For instance, the Nile, the St-Lawrence, the Amazon are fleuves. The Seine also, despite being rather narrow. and the Hudson.

Thanks for the interesting explanation. I have only been to Quebec once but I love the place. The St. Lawrence is a magnificent river. I suppose the history played some part in its impact on me but the powerful river flowing to and gradually becoming the sea was just breathtaking.

I tend to agree. In recent years, the city did a lot to give back access to the river to citizens, and it's been really great.

I think some of us take the St-Lawrence for granted because we're used to having it right here. I try to teach my kids how special it is, especially in front of Quebec city (whose name means "where the river gets narrow". When you look at it, it becomes impossible to miss, and explains why the city was built here, at a perfect spot for defence.).
