The Humming Sphinx
Lens: Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 Macro Contemporary Camera: Pentax K3 Photo Location: Englewood, CO ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F4

These White Lined Sphinx moths, generically called humming bird moths, love to hang out at the flowers behind my house at night during the summer. They are are a little bit slower and clumsier than real hummingbirds, but still a lot of fun to watch. Kind tricky to get a good focus as you have to wait for one line up with a flower for a split second. I used a flash in order to get the ISO noise down and capture the wing movement. Instead of using a figure 8 like a hummingbird, they twist their wings between the up and down beats to hover.

Thanks for the kind words! If these were real hummingbirds, I would have had to triple the shutter speed. For some reason these flowers are the only ones the moths like.
