Rene Robert Cavelier Sieur De La Salle
Camera: K-30
Posted By: reh321, 07-24-2018, 10:18 AM

My town exists because a man known locally as just "LaSalle" learned from the natives that he could lug his canoe here from the St Joseph River {which flows into Lake Michigan} to the headwaters of the Kankakee River {which flows into the Mississippi River}; this was immensely important to the fur traders, giving reasonable access to both Quebec City and New Orleans, so the trader equivalent of convenience stores were established here.

Pictured below are two monuments remembering LaSalle {besides the street, hotel, and school named for him}. The first is where he began his first portage - the light area through the trees is the St.Joseph river at the bottom of a bluff. The second is the remains of a tree under which he signed an agreement with the natives {it was a living tree, literally held together by baling wire, when I was in college, but lightning finished it off}
