You most certainly
can call yourself a photographer. We're all at different points along the journey. IMHO, the most important thing for us amateurs is to enjoy what we're doing. After that, it's a series of choices as to how much and what we want to learn, and the time we can (or want) to dedicate to that. But if you're taking photos and enjoying that, you're a photographer. And if your wife likes (some of) them, that's even better!
I particularly like the shot of the female blackbird... the feather detail is excellent. The screw-drive 55-300 in its various incarnations is a brilliant little lens for the money
