The vivid colors of Yellowstone
Posted By: xs400, 09-16-2008, 03:33 PM

About a month ago I was in Yellowstone National Park. Beside the wonderful scenery, I was amazed by the vivid colors in and around the hot springs. The reds, yellows and orange colors come from the microorganisms that live in the hot mineral springs. The water in the hot springs was very clear and also had a very deep color.

Do you think there is too much polarization? That's one thing I learned, one can easily eliminate too much natural spectral light with polarizers. But notwithstanding my preferences, very nice work and colours.

Last time I went to Yellowstone was 17 years ago. I don't remember seeing those colors (orange/red) before. Also locations look unfamiliar to me.

Very nice images. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the comments. I have to say, the colors in the Grand Prismatic hot springs (pics 1 and 2) were the biggest surprise to me when I visited the park.

Never been there, but these pictures are making me think that it needs to be on the "places to visit" list.

Great shots.

Oh, yeah - put it on the list... It is abso-freakin-lutely amazing and awe-inspiring!

And the colors in these images really *are* that bright in person.

Jim (hell, when do we go for the PF photo-meet in Yellowstone?!)

Great photos! Especially 1 and 4 (my taste, all have the colors, but 1st also have structures I like). Need to go there some time, recently was a program on Swedish public service TV (american production bought in), though they focused on super-vulcanos, there were fantastic views of Yellowstone. Hope I get a chance to see it before the super-eruption

I noticed it is really useful when using polarization filters for landscape to shoot both at maximum filtration effect and then turn the filter 90 degrees and take a second shot to learn how much effect it has.
