From this view, these cars sure look small; I hope he has enough cage ahead of him to keep his legs in one piece.

They are small, about 10 feet long. The front suspension mounts to the end of the tubular chassis structure and the drivers feet are behind that.

They are tight.

I still remember when AJ Foyt ruined his feet in a collision.

Ouch! That is pretty cold! He had a reputation as a jerk that is for certain. Did you ever meet him to find out if it was true?

A Ford pushrod 4 banger, 1600 Crossflow. Weber 2 stage carb, header.

Yes he did.

More times than I care to remember.

I watched him throw stuff around, smash a laptop to pieces, and talk to crew members in a manner that no one should have to endure.

The man was used to having his way, and when things didn't go his way he reacted with violence and a foul mouth.

The thing is, as a boy, A.J. Foyt was one of my heroes.

Then, as a young adult, I started hanging out at race tracks, and saw him several times. It didn't take long and all I wanted to do was kick him in the nuts whenever I saw him.

I was crushed.

One traditional part of pre-race instructions at the Indy 500 are essentially "No one has ever won this race on the first lap, but many have lost it on the first lap". One year there was accident before they reached Turn One, and no matter how many ABC replayed the start, it appeared that Foyt's car was already out of position ... but nothing came of that other than his car being one of many that ended up in the garage.

Turn 1 on starts and restarts was often the end of the race for a lot of people. IMS has taken the good and the bad.
