Walking Towards a Wall of Ice
Lens: Sigma 17-70 Contemporary Camera: K-3II Photo Location: Near Skagway Alaska
Posted By: ToddK, 07-28-2018, 03:57 PM

Here are a few shots of a really fun nature tour to Davidson Glacier about an hour by boat from Skagway, Alaska. The tour involves the boat ride, a short hike in really uncomfortable rubber boots , canoeing across a glacial lake, and then walking across a large gravel area that was pushed out by the glacier (I know there is a name for this but it escapes me). You can't really get right up to the glacier since there is a large flow of water coming out at the base, but close enough to see the impressive mass of ice at the front edge. FYI, this glacier has been rapidly receding over the past century. You can actually google it and see photos that show that it was much wider and probably a half mile or more forward from what it is today. Also, a piece of advice - I would definitely recommend a weather sealed lens for this. Besides the possibility of rain, there is a lot of wind and dust kicked up on the walk to the glacier.

Thanks for the comments. I am glad you appreciated the sequence. I thought it would provide more impact than the single shot.

very nice, tremendous detail in the ice on that first one. I may be wrong, but I think the gravel at the edge or toe of the glacier is the terminal or terminus moraine.

I like the first one, because I like people to add life, but I especially like the third one with the reflections
