Twisted exhaust headers on a stock car.

They do this so each tube is the same length. Tuned exhaust.

What is the benefit of a "tuned exhaust" Looks like something that would be difficult to design.

As I recall it helps equalize the exhaust back pressure so as to even out the power of the engine

Equal length primaries in exhaust allows for equal exhaust flow for all cylinders. All systems have some backpressure, and a design like this keeps everything equal by reducing that backpressure and improving scavenging.

And yes, it is a difficult challenge. Racing, much like anything, presents challenges. Overcoming those challenges is how we succeed.

The intake is also tuned. Earlier I showed a photo of one of the engines that these headers would be attached to.

I would think a number of tuned exhausts are custom made. Imagine the measuring, cutting, welding, fitting, etc. that takes place...lot of time. I have seen some of these header modeling kits...which help with layout, etc...before getting the metal tubing out and going to work on it.

I do recall seeing a very complicated set of headers on a 289 V8, in a older Ford GT years ago. Very impressive to look at.
