Lens: DFA 100mm Macro WR + 1.4xTC Camera: K-3ii Photo Location: Berlin ISO: 3200 Shutter Speed: 1/1500s Aperture: F4
Posted By: UserAccessDenied, 07-31-2018, 11:32 AM

Finding myself, once again, wishing I took more time to dial in my settings...
I went from shooting my DA*300 + 1.4xTC at 1/1500s to the DFA100 for some garden macro shots.

Forgot to drop the shutter speed and ended up with this iso3200 mess...

Still happy with the way it turned out, but curious if it would have been "cleaner" at iso400 with comparable adjustments to shutter/aperture...

Comments, critique, etc welcomed!

Honestly this is kind of surprised me...
I usually keep a cap on ISO at 1600 for my K3ii. This one snuck past me lol.

I'm considering the K1 for macro, but it's kinda of expensive for what I would use it for.
Otherwise I'm waiting for the K-3ii successor to come out in hopes of even better low-light performance!

But I can't complain.
If you're looking at the K3ii, I highly recommend it. It was a hefty upgrade from the K30 at the time, but I feel very comfortable with it now.

Very nice and pleasing curve into a spiral. Being an old film guy, I may not be so sensitive to noise in an image, so it looks quite fine to me. I like the form, and any little noise dots are not noticeable. Very good image. Thanks.

It's like an alien antenna. And the high ISO doesn't seem to make the photo any worse for wear. Some noise but still manageable.

IMO this is a case where the composition is strong enough that you can forgive slight technical shortcomings. Overall it makes a good impression. If you have access to Topaz De-Noise or something of equal quality, you could try processing this image through that software and see if you like it. Also, looking at the EXIF data, the jpeg quality is 85%. Assuming you saved the image at 100%, the website is applying compression, probably because the image height exceeds 800 pix. It probably looked better on your computer when you were editing it. I've discovered that if I keep my posted images at no more than 800 pix high, the jpeg quality stays at 100%, and they look much better here on PF.

I realize the original post is from a few years back. Well, the K-3 III is now out, and no doubt the higher ISO performance is very good. If you can't afford one though, you might consider a KP. I've got my auto-ISO set to top out at 6400, but I've seen KP images taken at 8000 and even 10,000 that were every bit as good as your image above or even better.
