Trolleys
Posted By: reh321, 08-05-2018, 09:05 AM

A few years ago my daughter and I were sitting outside the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN, waiting for my wife to finish reading her way through the exhibits. These are the trolley cars that went past our position; you will notice that each one was painted a unique color. These are not in the order we saw them, instead I ordered them by number on the car; the first two were imported from Porto, Portugal, the next three from Melborne, Australia, and the last one was recently manufactured.

Nice series. I like how the old buildings in the background of some of the photos seem to match the age of the trolley. San Francisco also repurposes old trolleys from around the world and I enjoy riding in them - I feel like I'm inside a Film Noir.

Since we were on foot and waiting for my wife, we moved around in a fairly small neighborhood - perhaps two blocks in all. Since the Lorraine Motel and building MLK was shot from are in that area, they seemed to be either replacing or refurbishing buildings one at a time.

In looking over these images again, I notice that the last photo, a modern attempt to construct an older-looking machine, is the only one held together with rivets. The others, the ones that actually are older, is welded together.

Great images and information.

It's wonderful to have so many different colours and styles of Trolly machines running the route, must make life far more interesting for those who use them.

Thank you for your comment. This "parade" entertained us while we waited, so I was hoping that others would also find interest in all the variety there also.

Does this mixture run all the time on this route or just special occasions?

As far as I know, this was an every day thing. Apparently they had to close down the whole system recently, and inspect each car individually after one caught fire - it turns out that old equipment requires more regular maintenance than new stuff does {anyone who has owned an older automobile could have told them that!}. I'm not sure if they're providing regular service yet.
