Colleen Moore's dollhouse
Posted By: reh321, 08-07-2018, 07:48 AM

Colleen Moore was a star of the silent screen. This so-called dollhouse donated by her has been a main exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago for many years .... I remember it as my mother's favorite exhibit when we lived in Chicagoland sixty years ago.

Fascinating! I know well who she was; I had no idea she had anything like this.

And it is incredibly detailed. For example, it is said that the books in the library consist of a stack of separate pages actually bound together {but I don't know that anything is actually printed on them}

Looking at my other photos from that day, this photo shows virtually all of it. I believe it dates back to the 1930s, but I'll have to check on that.
The museum's web-site says "One of the most popular film actresses of her time, Colleen Moore assembled a legion of her industry colleagues to help craft this miniature home of fantastic proportions. She shared it during the Great Depression, touring the country to raise funds for children's charities. Then this one-of-a-kind castle was welcomed into its new home at MSI, where it has enchanted children of all ages since 1949."

Certainly one of a kind. Might struggle to get it into an average house! But it seems to have been created for the right reasons.

Especially if Ms. Moore used some of her accumulated wealth to put unemployed artisans to work before using result of their work to raise money for charity.

Good for her! Colleen was quite the star; I've seen some of her movies, and she was a very talented actress. It's good to see that she was involved in charity, as well.

In the mid-1950's, my mother (*) was probably not thinking of all these things - she just loved the house for all the little things it contained. Sometime in the later 1950's my dad built a basic doll house for my sister; after she went to college and left it behind, my mother adopted it and spent the rest of her life "improving" it. I forget whether my sister or our cousin was given it just before my mother died.

(*) it is hard to think of her at half my current age, although I was around then

They ought to rename it... Colleen Moore's Dolls Castle, as that's what it is.

I should know coming from a land full of them.

Americans stopped using words like "Lord", "Lady, "Castle", and stopped naming baby boys "George", around 1776.

Yep.

After that, Noah Webster worked on his dictionary of "American English", and various other things happened to make the US distinctively different from England, unlike Canada which remained close.
