My first Concert Shoot
Posted By: Damn Brit, 09-17-2008, 10:52 PM

I was lucky enough to be given the chance to photograph a concert on Saturday:
Experience on the Green [Chapter One]

It was a great experience, I had a press pass and had access backstage. It was also the first time I had ever used a flash (other than flip up) apart from a few shots a couple of weeks ago to practice. It was also a long and tiring day 10.30 - 6.30 My hats off to the guys who do that for a living. I am still sore from all the crouching and moving around but that's partly down to me being weak from my recent back problems (I go in for my second epidural next week)

First shot is Ray Parker Jr. - (Ghostbusters theme)
Second shot is Michael Henderson - vocalist for Miles Davis for quite a while
Third shot - Ladies man
Fourth shot - How's that for a paint job?
Fifth shot, group shot - Not sure who the guitarist is but the drummer is Ndugu Chancler who also played with Miles Davis and is one of the top 25 drummers/percussionist in the world.
Here are the first ones I have PP'd.

Comments welcomed

Congratulations Gary....press pass eh? what next... fame & groupies?
I imagine it would be quite daunting to undertake something like that....officially and around that sort of talent.
Kudos to you for taking it on and look forward to seeing more of the results.
Cheers

I was nervous for two weeks but when I got there I just had fun. Most of these people are people I have admired for a long time.

How dare you. Actually I did get a shot of the paparazzi, I'll post it in a while.

Here are some more:

1 is Patrice Rushen - She did a song titled "Send me for-get-me-nots" If you have been to a wedding, you've probably heard it.
2 A closer shot of Ndugu Chancler - He and Patrice were having a drum battle at this time.
3 is Kevin Toney - Keyboard player for Donald Byrd who was the main reason for me wanting to shoot this show. He is in is eighties now and couldn't be there due to illness.
4 - is Roberta Flack and she's still Killing it.
5- is Tony Terry, Robertas backing singer but successful in his own right as an R'n'B and Gospel singer.

cheers

Great shots Gary... I would have loved to have been there and had the same opportunity.

I have been looking for your face in Michael Hendersons glasses.

Has Ray Parker seen the shots?

I reckon if he has he wont be singing "who you gunna call" for the next shoot.

Thanks Neil, I went backstage and said to him "I hope you don't mind Mr. Parker but I've been taking InfraRed pictures of you". I showed him one on the LCD and he gave me his email so I could send him some..

Last five for now.

1 is Roberta Flack's sax player, don't know his name I'm afraid.

2 This girl was something to do with a charity that was involved with the show. The whole event was a celebration of women who have been pioneers in local television news. I thought she was beautiful and I'm quite pleased with the shot.

3 @Cupic, the promised paparazzi crowding the front of the stage.

4&5 A couple of IR shots with a converted K100 courtesy of Frank.

I should say that my PP skills are quite lacking, I used the guided function in Elements 6 (hence no PP apart from unsharp mask because there is no guidance for IR).
If anyone knows how to switch the Red and Blue channels in Elements6 please let me know. Thanks.

The awesome Miss Flack.
"The first time ever I saw your face" was the song I used to woo my wife with.....(picking myself up from the kneeling position now)
We saw her in Adelaide, South Australia.....many many moons ago.

LOL--get up slowly,ok? I once heard (several years ago) this song by Roberta is the slowest recorded song to ever make it to the bigtime. It is a great song!

Gary, for a firstimer, or a longtimer, you have produced great results--congrats to you. I have empathy for your back situation--best of luck to you as you proceed with it.

Really good stuff here, Gary. The guys are all pretty cool, but......ROBERTA FLACK!!!

IMO, she is THE greatest living vocalist......2nd only to Ella Fitzgerald in my book.

BTW, I'm still trying to figure out how you took a close-up shot of a woman without even knowing who she was.
