Nice catch, really as you must have been pretty close for the 50 to work. I have never even tried a high iso super fast shutter type shot, nor would I have thought to try that before seeing this (I am not much of a photographer, just have cameras). Thanks for sharing.

It is a delicate balance of how close the camera is to the bird. The closer the camera to the bird, the more of a need for faster frames per second (my fastest camera = 14fps). The further the way your camera is away from the bird, the more of a need for megapixels due to UNAVOIDABLE heavy cropping due to birds are so small. You wont realize how small the birds are until you evaluate your pics later.

Also, HIGH ISO is also UNAVOIDABLE due to the needed shutter speed to freeze these birds. Any dip in light or shade cover will drastically effect ISO depending on camera position in relation to the Sun, metering, and background (sky).
