Machinery Essex Boat and Train

A few years ago my wife and I rode the boat-then-train ride which leaves from Essex CT. I took this photo from the boat as we and the train both approached their joint terminal.

The train was using locomotive #40, which was constructed in 1920 - 98 years ago - so I guess you would say "Yes".
The state of Connecticut is very much enamored with the "New Haven" railroad, so they use a herald that is modeled on what the "New Haven" used on steam locomotives of that vintage.

It turns out that I also took a photo of just the locomotive, which gives a much better view of it and the herald they're using

Ever since Gettysburg Railroad had a boiler explode a few years ago, the federal government has prescribed a particular minimum maintenance schedule for boilers. I'm guessing that encourages them to provide proper maintenance for the rest of the locomotive also.

Boilers can be very dangerous. They weren't as good at math back then as we are today, so they made more mistakes.

Even apart from design issues, it turns out that boilers can "go bad" - strains on the boiler can cause it to flex slightly, while corrosion and other effects can reduce thickness of the shell. Part of the required regular maintenance is taking all the parts off the boiler, including the outer skin {the outer shell we see is not the actual boiler} so they can ultrasound the parts that actually withstand pressure

Very nice shot. I live about an hour from there and have never been there.

We lived in the Massachusetts part of the valley at one time. Although my hobby interest is in trains, I enjoyed the boat ride more than the train ride; boat rides almost always give a view of things that you can't get from land ..... do try it!
