I was trying to photograph birds myself, but I just couldn't ignore this guy and his outfit.

Why didn't he use the rail? Any guesses as to the lens?

Interesting in a way. That lens has got to weigh a ton at least. It does appear as though he is donning a shoulder harness. Doesn't look to be very safe, at least to the lower back.

I've often though about a really long lens to get closer to wildlife but each time I think about it I figure the weight would quickly take all the enjoyment out of photography.

That wouldn't be very sporting. I don't see how such a set up could possible be held steadily enough for a decent exposure. But as long as he is happy ….

In my best Han Solo... That's no hood. (at least the first of the "hood-like" sections isn't.
