This nest was at the very edge of Niagara Falls. There are no predators here, except water and gravity.

They can fly in and out, so this makes perfect sense - good catch!

It makes some sense, except when you see the rushing water surrounding this tiny island that looks in danger of being overwhelmed, and the cliff a few inches away, and hear the power of water dropping straight down, the mist that rises, I thought this makes no sense at all other than avoiding predation from organic sources.

Thanks for posting a really interesting pic. An interesting choice for a nest site. Obviously airborne predators could still be a problem. But the chicks had better be able to fly well from the moment they exit the nest. No room for error and no space to practice!

Thank you for all the kind comments.

The birds were so far away that day on an outcropping all I could see was they landed at this dangerous looking position. I could not see they were tending to young in a nest -- until I slipped the SD card into a USB port, and viewed what I had on a big screen.

Talk about living on the edge....the young birds will literally sink or swim in their first attempt at flight and swimming about in the water in this situation. Wonder if the seagulls who chose the nest there, are first time...and chose poorly...as some ghostly knight said in a Indiana Jones movies.

Consider the constant noise of the falls which would seem to serve as a warning about the precariousness of their position.
