You obviously know your rock. I had to read about layers of basalt at another scenic overlook.

Grew up here in Seattle area, reading about the birth of the Columbia Plateau by thousands of giant flood basalt eruptions covering the land from Oregano to Canuckia millions of years ago. Endlessly fascinating stuff...

Often, my wife and I will be enjoying a vista, so I'll get my camera out and try several different focal lengths and several different perspectives, then announce "It just won't work"; only certain things translate well to this medium.

Time of day plays an important role as well. This was not the optimum time of day. When you're traveling from one location to another you don't always have a choice. You take what you can get.
