Muppets Studebaker
Posted By: reh321, 08-17-2018, 11:00 AM

This is my favorite old car in the National Studebaker Museum. It was used by the Muppets to drive down the street in a movie. The actual driver was in the trunk; you can see the steering wheel - he had other controls and video screen so he could see what he was doing.

Yup, this one was "for real" .... not done via "lab magic".
Thank you for your comment.

Love it! Thanks for sharing the how behind some great comedy.

As a total gearhead and hot rodder, I've always wanted to find an old bullet-nosed Studebaker in that particular model, and paint it up in the rainbow color scheme. Of course, I'd add in a blown hemi, full cage, rear tubs, and effectively make it into a pro-street car with real speed, but it would certainly add meaning to the phrase, "Can you picture that?"

Thank you for your comments.

I don't personally know how many of the bullet-nosed cars remain. Even in South Bend, we don't see very many .... other than the time once a year when they come back to town for a "reunion". I always thought it was a neat design also. My dad owned two Studebakers over time .... a slightly later one that over time developed such compression issues that it could barely handle down-state hills, and a bullet-nosed one that he never dared take out of town - eventually the floorboards of that car started rusting through, and he would terrorize my mother by talking about installing some "Flintstone-type" brakes.

It was a great movie. Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear were on a road trip across Ameria. The evil Doc Hopper was in pursuit. The Muppets were assisted by some friends who 'disguised' the tan colored Studebaker as a rainbow colored Studebaker. The remnants of that paint job is still visible in the picture, but time has not been kind to what must have been a quick job by the production team.

The reaction from Kermit and Fozzie upon seeing the pain job was something along these lines: "I don't know how to thank you. I don't know why I should thank you."

Yes, that was a fun movie - I'm glad the museum was able to save this car.

Yes, this was a bullet-nosed Studebaker - that neat Loewy design is probably the only reason they used a Studebaker.

The Muppet Wiki article says the camera which fed an image to the driver was hidden in the nose.

Thank you for your comments to this {I thought} long forgotten thread.

Yes, to see for historical reasons and to see how it was actually done.
