here is a place where the tracks definitely end. In Chicago's Union Station, they have one of these massive devices at the end of each track. Trains usually stop short of this point, but they certainly aren't going to have any runaway trains here! Yellow bumper is attached to a firmly-anchored hydraulic ram to absorb lots of energy.

Unless you watch a movie where someone hijacks a train and crashes it into the station - its good to know the authorities watch the same movies and are dealing with the supposed vulnerabilities.
