A beautiful headstone near the ghost town of Flora Oregon. Probably cost a pretty penny back in the day. I'm not totally convinced they got their money's worth. The inscription seems to be off a bit.

It looks like a fine old traditional tombstone me. What am I missing in the inscription?

This is what I see.
"Fell asleep in Jesus"

"Blessed are the Dead who
the in the lord"

Makes more sense to me if it said

"Fell asleep in Jesus' arms

"Blessed are the dead who
believe in the Lord."

There was no granite or marble in this area in the late 1800's to make head stones. There is no granite or marble in this area today. The family must have ordered this head stone and had it delivered. By wagon. Could have taken UPS weeks to deliver it. Actually it probably took at least a month, maybe two, for the ordered head stone to be delivered. So here's the question they had to ask themselves. Do we use the one that just got delivered? Or send it back and wait another 2 months. Did the company who provided the head stone have some kind of guarantee? In 1891?

I love old headstones. This one is in surprisingly good condition, considering its age.

I'd like to see more from this cemetery; it looks very atmospheric.

Your two "the"s don't look the same to me.
I couldn't/haven't decided what to make of it.

Didn't take many shots. This is the best one I got. We needed to be somewhere at 4:00 so we were pressed for time. I'll see what I can do and post another later.

I've enlarged it, sharpened it and changed the exposure. I can't be sure what it says. It's really not all that important so I gave up trying to decipher it last night.

That's why I asked my question.
Now that I've thought about it, I read it as "die" last night.
If nothing else, I guess it shows that inscription may have been a tad more fancy than appropriate.

Elisha is a woman's name - were these folk way ahead of their time?
