Apparently I don't spend enough time at this end of the house. Never saw any Bald Faced Hornets building this nest.

What an intricate structure, I'm glad I'm not the one to remove it!

I wonder how long it takes hornets to construct something like that - I was surprised at how fast a robin can construct a nest

From Wikipedia:

"However, the baldfaced hornet has a unique defense in that it can squirt venom from the stinger into the eyes of vertebrate nest intruders. The venom causes immediate watering of the eyes and temporary blindness."

Ouch! Time to get rid of it!

Have not come up with a plan yet. I may wait until a good hard freeze this winter.

While running an errand earlier today I spotted an ad by a local fellow for "free hornet removal." Left a message.

Is that an active nest? I don't see any guards at the entrance.

I'm willing to share. What's your address?

Not very. Not too long ago I stood there and watched it for a couple of minutes and saw two hornets fly out. That was it.

Wait until after dark and move in with a flamethrower. Or maybe not - wooden house!

I wonder what would happen if you put duct tape over the hole? (After dark, of course.)

I've decided to send my wife up the ladder with a garden hose and a large stick. I've put myself in charge of documenting the event photographically.
