Grasshopper & Dragonfly images from VLF competition
Posted By: Marc Langille, 09-21-2008, 09:53 AM

I did not submit these images, although now I am wondering if I should have submitted this dragonfly image... NO cropping in either image...

Grasshopper - this guy was getting REALLY irritated with my using the flash. Eventually he jumped onto the camera...

Crop of the grasshopper's head for details - this is only 50% of the actual size:

EXIF info:
Date Taken 2008-05-10 00:00:00
Camera PENTAX Corporation PENTAX K10D
Exposure Time 0.0055s (1/180)
Aperture f/18.0
ISO 400
Focal Length 200mm (300mm 35mm)
Photo Dimensions 3872 x 2592

Dragonfly - I was close to the MWD (minimum working distance) of 11 inches with the lens:

I do like the fact that you can clearly see the "truss" structure within the dragonfly's wing...

EXIF info:
Date Taken 2008-06-06 11:52:25
Camera PENTAX Corporation PENTAX K20D
Exposure Time 0.004s (1/250)
Aperture f/11.0
ISO 800
Focal Length 200mm (300mm 35mm)
Photo Dimensions 4672 x 3104

Cheers,
Marc

Great work Marc - I think that grasshooper could be used for Biology students - great detail. The dragonfly ain't bad either but for me the hooper is tops.

LOL.. thanks Jimbo. I really like the camo theme on the grasshopper - it was too interesting to NOT photograph. I agree about the dragonfly... lesson learned... dang it. The awards were last night, so I should be able to find out on Monday.

Evidently 350 people were expected to attend... turns out I might have been able to go due to a change of plans, so that's a disappointment...

Cheers,
Marc

Marc - that grasshopper is the best bug shot I've seen in a long time.

Thanks Dave!

I think you just like the "camo motif" - it is quite unique...

Cool shots, what detail! The grasshopper reminds me of the grasshopper in the movie "A Bugs Life". He has the same bad attitude...."Let's ride!"
