Southern Bettong
by RobGeraghty, on Flickr

I'm so excited to get a good photo of this endangered species! A population of the Southern Bettong was introduced to Mulligan's Flat Nature Reserve from Tasmania. The Bettong became extinct in mainland Australia due to predation by Foxes. Mulligan's Flat sanctuary has an electric fence around it to keep Foxes, cats and rabbits out. Bettongs feed on truffles, roots, grubs and insects.

Worth being excited about. An endangered bird nests at a preserve where my wife goes birding - I keep looking, but as far as I know I've never seen one, .... but you saw you found what you were looking for!

Sun was against you, but you still go a good photo out of this.

Thanks! The sanctuary is 485 hectares, and Bettongs are nocturnal, so I count myself very lucky to see two in daylight. Sorry to hear that you haven't seen the birds you've been looking for. When I saw the Bettong I was heading back to the car, which happened to be westward. I tried to circle around to get the sun behind me, but he hopped away. I do have another photo of the second Bettong in shade, but of course it doesn't have as much detail or clarity.

Thanks! I hope that large sanctuaries like Mulligan's can help save species from extinction. I wish foxes, cats, pigs, goats, camels and rabbits never ended up roaming free in Australia.

Thanks! I saw them previously at night, when it's a lot harder to take photos.
