Snakes anyone?
Posted By: Marc Langille, 09-21-2008, 10:48 AM

This visitor showed up perhaps 10 feet from me - I heard scuffling/slithering noises while staked out to photograph any activity in an open area. Turns out the Coachwhip was in the midst of predating and consuming a skink (small lizard). You'll notice a small bulge just behind it's head, beyond the first turn in the body. Here's the end result:

EXIF info:
Date Taken 2008-05-15 17:29:23
Camera Canon EOS 40D
Exposure Time 0.0012s (1/800)
Aperture f/5.6
ISO 800
Focal Length 500mm (800mm in 35mm)
Photo Dimensions 2592 x 3888

I missed out on getting a sharp image of the action of the lizard trying to force it's way out of snake's mouth because a foreground object borked with the 40D + Sigma 500/4.5 lens' AF.

Western Ribbon Snake - this is a freshwater snake that was in a tree of all things? I don't know if it was bird hunting, looking for a nest, or whatever... He was a larger specimen at close to 6 feet in length. I setup the K20D + FA* 300/2.8 and used the 540 flash. I moved to within about 10-12 feet of the snake. Here's the result:

Crop of the head for detail - just a light sharpening to realize the iris details - it's about 50% of actual size:

EXIF info:
Camera PENTAX Corporation PENTAX K20D
Exposure Time 0.0055s (1/180)
Aperture f/11.0
ISO 200
Focal Length 300mm (450mm 35mm)
Photo Dimensions 4672 x 3104

This lens continues to impress me with it's clarity and sharpness...

Neither snake is venomous.

Cheers,
Marc

Great shots !!! I see a lot of snakes when I go fishing, but since I am a wade fisherman, I am a bit gun shy about taking my K10 with me, BUT, I have a couple old Ricoh film SLRs that I am not worried about getting wet !! Now to get a decent telephoto to take with me next time I hit the water !!

I would not dare standing so close to them all. The fear usually overtook me. The details are just impeccable.

Thanks Sratman...

Those images were both pretty much coincidence, nothing more! I was staked out in the blind by the lake, but no activity - so I started looking around and saw the snake in the tree...

Cheers,
Marc

Thank you Jimbo! I had no choice on staying there for #1 - otherwise I would've scared off the group of Eland about 200 feet away from me...

I saw #2 and headed over to it to take the shots...

Cheers,
Marc

Thank you Dave - it was quite a surprise to see the actions of nature (predator & prey) so close to me!
