Dragonfly in flight
Posted By: SSGGeezer, 09-12-2018, 08:54 AM

Amazed I caught this fellow with my DFA 100 macro. He would not settle down but he was large so I could track him.

Cropped to 875 x 875px.

Cool capture SSGGeezer...easier to capture when their down...even then, only if they stick around much...which they usually don't.

I shot a bunch more yesterday and got a badly out of focus in flight shot using my 55-300 PLM. I think that the combination of good contrast and a slower focusing lens was the key to success here.

That is an awesome shot. My reflexes are not nearly good enough to catch them in flight :P

Just a bit lucky panning.

How did you manage to focus on something so small? I can't even catch a big hawk in focus! Great shot!

I started with AF on by setting the lens at infinity and because I was over 3 meters away, the lens only had to make a short rotation for fine focus as I panned. That was the preparation, then there was at least a little luck due to a highly contrasting background that helped the AF work on a fast mover. Vegetation is too jumbled for good contrast when they are around the brush and bushes.
