It's a nice photo - the spider is all stretched out so we can see it - but I don't understand you title ...... do they hide during certain times of the year??

I don't know, but fall is when we start seeing them a lot more and suddenly they are abundant. I generally leave them alone. Sometimes if I big enough one is inside, I kill it, but mostly I let them be or relocate them.

This is one of the big garden orb weavers (nice shot BTW), a female, they are around all summer, but the females get quite large in late summer/early fall as they prepare to lay eggs (remember Charlotte's Web?) The males are around, but stay very small, and tend to make no webs, or very small ones, Varies by species.
They'll soon mate, the male may or may not survive that, the female will lay eggs, and in most parts of North America, she soon dies as the weather cools and the bugs she feeds on die off or hibernate.
The eggs will hatch in the following spring, when things warm up enough, and the cycle starts all over again.
You typically don't find these inside, they tend to keep out doors. Other spiders, mostly cob weavers (the really messy looking webs) seem to like inside areas.

very nice photo

the D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro lenses are very nice for macro, you have a little working room for 1:1 without being right on top of your target

and they make nice short telephoto lenses well

I have the non WR verison
