Autumn Forest
Lens: Tamron 10-24mm F3.6-4.5 Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Doorwerth, the Netherlands

We're experiencing the most fabulous autumn since we can remember. It's warm, and the weather is sunny and clear. After a long period (of about a year) of renovating our new (to us) house, we finally found the time to take some time to enjoy the world around us. So, we drove to Doorwerth, only about 15 mins from our house, to make a short hike in the beech woods near the castle. You can't imagine that this tranquil landscape suffered severely in the autumn of 1944: it was the battle ground of Operation Market Garden. In the last photo, there is a glimpse of Arnheim in the Rhine Valley. It's here where the allied forces were blocked by the Germans, leaving Europe in another half year of war.

But nothing of that this afternoon. We felt blessed and happy!

A beautiful set of fall photos! I have read about the battle. What a different scene that was back then. Thanks for sharing!

There's a great movie (and book) about it; A Bridge Too Far, as far as I understand it's pretty accurate.

Thank you! Yes, that must have been a completely different scene. All the more because these slopes were almost completely devoid of trees. Afforestation here started mainly after the war, whereas before the war, they were almost completely covered by heathlands and oak scrubs....

A Bridge Too Far happens to be one of my favourites, already from my teenage years....

Thank you François! yes, the light was fabulous. The only thing I had to do was to find the right spot and press the shutter. Blessed!
