My Hurrican Ike experience (Many photos)
Posted By: dws1117, 09-26-2008, 10:19 AM

Well Hurricane Ike is long gone. There is still no power in our neighborhood, but we fared well and are now using a generator provided by a friend who had had his power restored. The only damage to my house was the loss of a single fence board. My mother, who thankfully was with us, has lost everything. She lived on Galveston Island and from reports had 4 foot of water in her apartment. The island was opened to residents on Wednesday. We are going tomorrow for our first look. You bet I'll have my Pentax with me. My thoughts and prayers go out to the many that have lost so much more. My thanks to those who have worked and are still working to restore power and to those who came to the aid of their neighbors in these times.

So here is part of my experience in pictures. All photos were taken with the K200D and the 18-55 II to the best of my recollection. Everything was shot in jpg and just re sized.

Thanks for bearing with me for this long post.

This was taken two days before the storm.

Neighbors preparing for the storm.

Aftermath

Just after the storm I took a drive around the neighborhood.

A little humor. Folks that's a hula hoop in that tree.

Wow...

Glad to hear you made it through okay. As bad as it looks, I guess Galveston got hit a lot harder. Sorry to hear about your mom's place. Good thing she's fina and had you around to look out for her...

Thanks, Maxwell.

You're right about Galveston. We made it down yesterday. The place is really torn up. We were able to to salvage more from my mom's place than we had thought. Right now her possessions fit inside a space smaller than a one car garage. That's much more than many.

Wayne - Glad your mom got off the Island - that uprooted tree is just wow !! I have a sister in Katey - they had a storm, power outage for about a day nothing else. Glad to see the community carrying on and all is well with you and yours.

I don't know what to say. You've captured the power of the beast so well and left me speechless. Glad you and your family are safe and well.

These shots tell the tale, Wayne. Scene looks a lot like Lake Jackson after the storm; things are starting to look normal around here now. Kemah, Seabrook and - of course - Galveston will take a lot longer to recover.

Good to hear you made it thru relatively unscathed. Sorry your mom's place didn't fare so well but at least she is safe. Saw a lot of pics from Galveston and y'all are fortunate that there was anything left at all.
