A Breaking Wave at Turtle Bay, Oahu
Lens: DA*60-250 w/1.4x Teleconverter Camera: K-3 II Photo Location: Oahu ISO: 3200 Shutter Speed: 1/1500s Aperture: F8
Posted By: ToddK, 12-20-2018, 10:31 PM

I spent quite a bit of time attempting to photograph waves while dodging rain squalls and wind. This was my best result and required a bit of PP. It might be too much for some, but my goal was to capture the drama of the Oahu North Coast in December. The really big waves at Sunset Beach, the Pipeline and Waimea Bay were too far out to capture with the gear I had with me. I am happy to report that my gear held up to the rain without any problems.

Dramatic capture ! Perfect timing (although PP is indeed a tad too much to my taste )

Thanks for the comments Dan! I am still playing with the original and plan to tone down the saturation a bit. The hard part was trying to reduce noise which was pretty significant. I think it might actually be a combination of spray and noise. It ends up giving it kind of a painted look.

Nice photo. Maybe some day Pentax will have an appropriate new camera for you, and you won't have to worry about noise much at this ISO level.

Thanks for the comment. I haven't really had too much of a problem with noise with my K-3II until this outing. It would have been interesting to see how the KP would perform taking the same shots. I had a few that were at ISO 6400 as well. I am optismistically holding out for the K-3II replacement

in my opinion, this is a very finely crafted image! Reminds me of Kanagawa's Great Wave! the light is beautiful, the composition is great, and you have tweaked the whole thing
with a lot of flair! I have nothing but reverence for a pleasing image such as this one! It speaks of the beauty of our World through and through!
Well done! Great work! and keep it up!

Francois, thanks SO much for your comment and appreciation! I had hoped to end up with a dramatic wave photo on my trip, and while taking a whole bunch of shots, I didn't think I could end up with something like this one. It ended up more painting-like, but to me that is not a bad thing with this photo.

you are absolutely right! there is nothing wrong with a little artistic license! It is the final result that matters most. a painting you say... well, this is a very pleasing use of a gorgeously cool
color palette.
If post-processing is an offence to some, (which it isn't!) to others, it has simply been a part of photography right from the beginning! and is pretty much an art form of its own!
Feel free to express your innervision! I'll enjoy these images anytime!

If you see it, capture it! Please, be my guest!
