And Ouchi-Juku, a post town the the Edo period 400 years ago. The post towns were established at a day's travel along each of the highways connecting the provinces of Edo period Japan. Mail was carried by couriers on horseback in a relay so they only travelled from one post town to the next. The post towns also provided rest stops for pilgrims and the entourages of Daimyo (feudal lords) making their regular processions to Edo (Tokyo).
