Llyn Idwal - B&W conversion
Posted By: simonkit, 09-29-2008, 03:14 PM

Just revisiting a few recent shots to try-out a couple of B&W conversions as it's something I've never really had much of a go with, not really sure if this one works though, C&C appreciated

That's a good conversion Simon, the clouds really pop.
Any chance you can post the original for comparison.

I love the definite ring around the lake.

And the fact you didn't do anything silly like over-wrought HDR.

How did you convert to black-and-white?

The ring is a very well walked path, very popular spot this both because of the stunning scenery & because it's within a 15 minute walk of a car park/main road !!

Must admit HDR isn't really my thing either, I try very much to keep my shots natural looking - although B&W isn't exactly that

Conversion wise I did it in ACR using the "convert to Grayscale", played with the sliders a little and then added some more contrast in CS3

thanks

I think the trees in the near foreground lost something in the conversion Simon, they look a bit too dark to me.
That was a minor point by the way I don't think the darker trees detract from the image, I really like the picture.

I like the colour one better. But next time when you're there, try to move bit to the right side, so you'll get the little tree to little bit to the left side of the peak of the mountain. I think I'd work better.

I just love the original, I dont seem to have a spot for B&W conversion for landscapes.

But the picture, makes me want to go back to Wales, I left there when i was 12 and I am 40 in 7weeks

beautiful

No offence intended, but to my eyes that looks very "digital"; very unlike a silver-halide B&W image. Now there is no rule that says it has to look like an traditional B&W image - I do accept that. As Damn Brit said, the clouds really stand out against the sky, and I don't think I could get that degree of contrast even with a red filter. I haven't been able to get my digital conversions to look like the traditional B&W film appearance I like, either. Yet.

Thanks for the comments very useful...

I must admit that I'm normally very much a "colour fan" but thought I'd have a go at a few B&W conversions, this one doesn't fully work for me but it's certainly heightened my interest in B&W - I'll definitely be given it a go in future
