The Road Less Traveled

I may have posted some of these a few years ago :-) These are from 2 trips to the St Francis dam ruins, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles. The leaky dam broke in 1928 and killed about 500 +/- people.

This 1.5-mile long side road parallels the main highway, and is blocked off at both ends.

This is near the upper north end looking south.

Here's a good 4-minute-long history/disaster animation:

A few more of the area.

Highway at right, dam road at left, looking down-river from below the ruins.

Another visitor.

"You've gone too far...the dam is behind you."

It's easy enough to miss.

Great shots! Kind of apocalyptic however. I thought I might see some zombies lurking in the brush

Nice series, I was struck by the irony of the winding road sign hidden by the bushes.

The last set...

Still some water...

The east and west wing dikes were long and thin extensions on each side of the main dam which raised the height 10-20 feet above the original design.

From the west dike looking to the east dike.

The southern road block.
