Photo of the Year
Posted By: Tom Lusk, 09-30-2008, 02:28 PM

Some of you may recall seeing this photo I took in Aug/2007. It's a Clearwing Hummingbird Moth- a real nifty little creature that is a combination of a moth, hummingbird and bumblebee. Actual size of these moths range from 1/2" to approx. 1" (1-2.5cm.). I have never seen one land- they are always on the go, making them fun (but a challenge) to photograph.

Taken with my K100D and Pentax FA*300/4.5, my all-time favourite Pentax lens.

I just received notification that it has won the Canadian Wildlife Federation Photo of the Year for 2007. Excellent prizes including a super-dooper HP printer. I can now print to 13x19" right at home.

Just echoing everyone elses sentiments. Good going! Beautiful photo.

I've never heard nor seen of such a creature. It's actually quite beautiful.

Great shot Tom! It clearly (no pun intended) deserves to be a winner.
Those little critters are tough-tough to shoot. You did great.

One question though, how does the new nikon afs 300 f4.0 stack up with the old
Pentax 300 f4.5 lens?
The 300/4 actually surprised me. With the D300, it gives better results than my FA*300/4.5. A lot has to do with the D300, though, I suspect.

Thanks for the answer Tom.
I have read that it was an excellent lens and knowing the
quality of work that you do I just wanted your opinion.
Good shooting as usual!
