Orton imagery
Posted By: JMR, 10-01-2008, 03:32 PM

Today I was able to shoot the equivalent of a true Orton image. I took one shot in focus and with proper f-stop, about F16, overexposed by two stops; then took a second shot completely out of focus, wide open about F4.5. Then I combined two images on one frame using layers. So this is what it is supposed to look like if you were using film process. I have not used any additional processing.

I just set up a temporary website at Smug Mug.

I've spent some time going through your gallery which is great BTW. Mind commenting on some thoughts I have about the process? As you said in another post the process seems to work best in fairly low contrast scenes. This leads me to think cloudy days may be the best time to capture images for this style, right? Composing the shot so there is little or no sky showing may be the most desirable. Any tips you have regarding composition would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

Thank you and to all who have commented. Your feed feedback is much appreciated. And you are right, of course. But I would say, in general try less contrasty scenes and watch out for black areas. Black can ruin an image if it bleeds excessively into other parts of the image or if it looks unnatural in critical parts of the image.
