Birds with the Bigma
Posted By: rfortson, 02-27-2007, 10:51 PM

Took a few shots outside of work with my Bigma. These cattle egret are practically tame, so you can get pretty close and the Bigma lets you fill the frame.
@500mm, f7.1, ISO200, 1/320s - I liked how these guys were lined up.

Here's one that found a little snack, taken @500mm, f7.1, ISO400, 1/320s.

I also shot a couple with my SMC K 300mm f4.0. I'll post those separately.

That first one looks like 'dawn patrol' sneaking up on something.
Fine captures, bokeh and compos.

Those birds are "stalking"? grr bad pun.

I like the second shot. First one, the head on the bird in the foreground was a touch oof.

I agree with you on the OOF head. I have that alot. I have my camera in AF-S, but the birds are moving. How do you shoot? Do you use AF-C? If you haven't seen the egrets walk, they have an exaggerated head bob that can be a little hard to catch.

Never shot birds before, so I can't say. They moved way too quick for my Fuji P&S when I tried so I gave up. Kids though...when they move man oh man do they make a hard target! MF is near impossible, and sometimes with autofocus, it's hit and miss. I still try MF over AF, prefocus in the direction they are going and when the target appears sharp snap in burst mode for 3 frames turning the focus slightly between shots.
