Galveston Island after Hurricane Ike
Posted By: dws1117, 10-02-2008, 07:34 AM

I've spent the last several days down in Galveston cleaning up my mother's apartment and salvaging what we could. I also took a few pictures along the way.

All were taken using the K200 and either the 18-55 II or the 50mm listed in my signature.

The Flagship Hotel

Whats left of Hooters, the historic Balaneese Room and various souvenir shops.

This is a pickup truck on whats left of a fishing pier.

An electric outlet I found in the sand on the beach.

This is a sign that was bent. Most of the signs along the seawall looked like this one or worse.

Amid all this destruction I just received some great news. The senior's apartment complex that my mother wants to move to just called me and said that they just had an opening and my mother can move in on November 11th.

Thanks for looking.

This one was taken of the historical Strand district. Everything on first floors was wiped out. Please excuse the poor quality and my inspection sticker. This was taken while driving and directly into the setting sun.

Nice photo doc, i'm sorry but the last one was a bit of whimsical-irony, made me laugh but then i stopped remembering the first photo thinking when will it crumble.

Yes it's damaged but standing but the drive to it didn't fare as well. It is a testament to how well it was built.

Amazing. The fury of nature never ceases to awe me. I went down to Katrina for the rescue/recovery work, and was there when Rita came through. I really think you have to see it to appreciate (?) it. Still, your shots definitely show us the power of the storm.

Thanks for posting!

Fantastic shots, I'm sorry to see all the damage. It's going to take quite some time to rebuild and get back to normal. (what ever that is)

Thanks for posting, it must have been emotional for you taking them.
That's great news for your mother though.

What a terrible mess.

Why don't people move out of there if this kind of crap happens so often?

It's quite simple really. Despite the occasional hurricane, this is the first significant one that directly hit here since 1983, the people that live there love it. There is a big saying around there called BOI. It stands for Born on Island and the "native" take it very serious. Many simply will not leave. It is home. They will rebuild and move on.

Actually, I like the effect, Wayne. Make a surreal image even more so. Pretty sad - I was on the Strand not long ago - sure never thought it'd look like this.

Thanks, Jer. It certainly was a sobering sight. It was truly sad, but The Strand and Galveston have been through this before and always come back just fine.
