The F40PH is often called "The Locomotive that Saved Amtrak". When Amtrak was first created in 1971, they commissioned two locomotive models from General Motors to replace the worn-out ones they had inherited - but the one intended for long-distance runs had issues, so for nearly twenty years so the F40PH designed for short runs pulled everything. Eventually, they moved on to another locomotive, and the F40PH filtered down to others. Personally I like styling of the F40PH the best of the locomotives that have been used by Amtrak.
