should have used a slightly deeper DOF to get the head as well as the feathers in focus, but when this bird lifted his tail, i wasn't sure how long i had, my heart suddenly jumped into my mouth when he presented himself to me.

The crucial thing here Taff is that you knew what you should have done.
It's not unreasonable to keep the camera on F8 fro walking around, especially on a brightly lit day.
