This pair of Great horned owls have been nesting at Stillwater NWR for several years and usually produce two or three chicks.

The other owl keeps an eye out perched on a nearby branch.

Great series. They are an impressive bird. I like their expression. But I am surprised that they nest in such a brightly lit area. I thought owls avoided daylight and preferred to nest in caves or dark hollows. Obviously not these. That is a big nest which indicates long use (as you say).

Owl chicks in the nest need fed constantly so the parents do not have the luxury of feeding only at night. They revert to their nocturnal ways once the chicks are out of the nest and can feed themselves. Large owls have high nestling survival rates because they are very good parents.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the images. It's a 120 mile round trip but I so enjoy seeing them that I go out several times each summer just to see them. These were taken three years ago.

One of last years chicks.
